Qn 1: Can you tell us more about your book What is it about?

There are three main aspects of my book. The first is a guide on how to produce a movie from scratch with as little budget as possible. Speaking from my own experience producing my feature film and all the mistakes I made during the process, I focus on the “working backwards” workflow that will help the filmmakers stay organized so they can eventually fit all the pieces together to create that final piece of art we call a movie. But what I also point out in the book is that a movie is not only a piece of art but also a commercial product. Once the filmmaker understands that and shifts some attention towards marketing and sales, there is some potential to make some good earnings. We live in a content-hungry age, there are so many streaming platforms that are looking for content, now more than ever there is a great opportunity for artists to make money. Lastly, I want to try and inspire people to follow their dreams and shoot the movie they always wanted to shoot. I wanted to write a book that encourages and motivates filmmakers, something I wished I had when I produced my first movie.

Qn 2: Who do you think would be interested in this book, is it directed at any particular market?

This book is intended for anyone who has ever thought about or dreamed of producing their own video content, be it a feature-length movie or YouTube videos. Artists, social media influencers, movie lovers, content producers, this book is directed to all of them. I tried to make the guide simple enough so anyone can understand the process of producing a movie and show that it’s possible to do with a very small budget. I would love for kids and teens to read my book and get inspired to become filmmakers. They can’t all grow up to be lawyers and accountants, we need some artists in this world also!

Qn 3: Out of all the books in the world, and all the authors, which are your favourite and why?

Just like movies, I don’t really have “favourite” authors. There are so many amazing authors out there and I am always looking to discover something new. Also, it really depends on my mood and what I feel like reading. When I feel like I need some inspiration I usually turn to books from Dr. Wayne Dyer or Jack Canfield. I love to read biographies as well, right now I am reading Will Smith’s WILL. My friend just introduced me to the poems of 13th-century Persian poet Rumi, I am really looking forward to reading his work. I also enjoy books about filmmaking, SAVE THE CAT by Blake Snyder is one of the best scriptwriting books in my opinion.

Qn 4: What guidance would you offer to someone new, or trying to enhance their writing?

Keep writing and reading! Practice makes perfect! I had written a lot of screenplays in the past but this was my first book so I had a lot of learning to do. Luckily I had some great editors at FriesenPress that helped me through the process. I would suggest finding an experienced writer or editor that can read and edit your work. Learn to accept criticism and understand that it might take 2 or 3 revisions before your work is ready for the public.

Qn 5: Where can our readers find out more about you, do you have a website, or a way to be contacted?

I am launching my new re-designed website (www.ivanperic.com) in a few weeks where you will be able to find all my work and info there, including future projects, speaking engagements and a fun new blog about filmmaking.
You can also find me on social media under @theivanperic
