About the Author

Super Q is Daniela Quintana’s first children book, though she’s worked with children for over 20 years! She obtained her Bachelors Degree in Developmental Psychology and since then has worked as a registered behavior technician and a preschool teacher. Working this closely with children gives Daniela the opportunity to view the world through their eyes. After experiencing Covid with the children she works with, she knows how confusing this pandemic has been for them— which is exactly why she wrote this book!

Daniela currently lives in the Bay Area in California. Though this is her first book, she plans to keep writing so that she can continue to help kids understand the world around them. She loves how anything can be taught with stories and play. Be sure to keep a look out for future children’s books!

Qn 1: Can you tell us more about your book. Super Q: The Quarantine Kid, What is it about?

Super Q is about a little girl that wants to go play at the park with her friend, but she knows Covid is out there so she’s not sure if she wants to go. With the help of Super Q, the Quarantine Kid, she’s able to stay safe while on the bus and all the way to the park. Super Q reminds her to wear her mask, wash her hands and stay six feet apart to keep that extra clingy and sneaky Covid.

Qn 2: Who do you think would be interested in this book,Super Q: The Quarantine Kid, is it directed at any particular market?

Yes, this book is for parents of children 3 and up who love picture books with a lesson on staying healthy. This book would be great for parents and teachers. It would be a great read for circle time at a preschool or even reading time at a local library.

Qn 3: Out of all the books in the world, and all the authors, which are your favourite and why?

“The Obstacle is the Way” by Ryan Holiday because it talks about how overcoming obstacles is the way to success. For the children’s book niche, I love “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Daywalt because it’s a very creative way to look at crayons if they were alive and talking and what they go through. Super awesome book!

Qn 4: What guidance would you offer to someone new, or trying to enhance their writing?

I would say to outsource if you have the budget and not the time because there are many people out there that can help you achieve your goals. If you have more time than budget, then take the time to study writers and authors who write the way you want to write and see if you can reach out to them for mentorship. You can always take a class as well or just look up YouTube tutorials on writing or read blogs by authors you like.

Qn 5: Where can our readers find out more about you, do you have a website, or a way to be contacted?

Not at the moment, but I am working on one. For now they can reach me at my personal email danielaquintana1983@gmail.com

Qn 6: What research did you do before writing Super Q: The Quarantine Kid?

I didn’t really do research. I just made a kid-friendly version of the CDC guidelines during the pandemic.

Qn 7: How did you make such a scary topic relatable and welcoming to young readers?

I made sure to make the characters relatable to young kids and I also made sure to make Covid not look scary while at the same time making him the villain in the story.

Qn 8: What is the most important point that young readers can take away from your book?

The most important point readers can take away from my book is to always stay safe (even after the pandemic is over) by always washing their hands. They may not need to stay 6 feet apart and wear masks forever, but it’s always a good idea to wash your hands because there a many other germs out there that can make them sick. As Super Q says, “Germs can’t be seen so keep your hands clean”.

Qn 9: Whilst Covid is very much a pandemic, do you think your book could still be enjoyed after we come out of this?

I think so. It may not be as relevant, but it’s a fun story and it still teaches kids to play safe at all times. This pandemic might end, but it’s not the last one we’re going to have so hopefully it helps kids on the future as well.

Qn 10: What do you have planned next, any new books?

Yes, I’m currently finishing up the illustrations for another book about how no matter how lonely and unworthy you feel, there is always someone that loves you and proud of you for being just the way you are. Im also brainstorming a follow-up to Super Q which will be a more evergreen topic so it will be relevant even after he pandemic.
