The Devil’s Thesaurus

About the Book

How does one define love? In a painstaking effort to answer this question, the nameless narrator takes the reader on a tumultuous journey of true love gone direly sour. Through poignant poetic storytelling in a unique dictionary format, Sam Faulk reveals the onslaught of emotion in the wake of a marriage’s covert deconstruction. Beyond a mere collection of emotive poems, The Devil’s Thesaurus serves as an outlet to grieve not only the loss of a lover or the opportunity at fatherhood but also the loss of self. Ambiguous, reckless, strenuous, and vacant… These are only a few of the adjectives that sum up the culmination of events that transpire throughout this book’s pages.

About the Author

I grew up in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I hold a Master’s of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Washington as well as other English-related degrees. In my spare time, I watch way too much Netflix and enjoys writing fiction/poetry.

I write in several genres spanning poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction memoirs. Most of my nonfiction writing is rooted in personal experience dealing with the effects of growing up with cerebral palsy, as well as finding God. I hope to give a voice to the disabled community and bridge the gap between “We will pray for healing” and “I’m comfortable with how God made me”.

Qn 1: Can you tell us more about your book What is it about?

This book has been my labor of love for over 9 years. It began as a way for me to process heartbreak through poetry and evolved into a fictional narrative of contemplation, loss, and joy. It’s written in a unique form, telling a story through small bite-sized poems.

Qn 2: Who do you think would be interested in this book, is it directed at any particular market?

Any and all adults who have felt the pang of loss, and the bittersweet taste of remembrance. Those who can find joy in the small things.

Qn 3: Out of all the books in the world, and all the authors, which are your favourite and why?

I drew a lot of inspiration from David Levithan’s “The Lover’s Dictionary” for this book. The way he writes characters and emotions takes my breath away, and I hope this book has half the depth as his book.

Qn 4: What guidance would you offer to someone new, or trying to enhance their writing?

Dig out the old pieces you may have forgotten about. This book was tucked away for 5 years, untouched, before I pulled it out again and spent a year finishing it and polishing it up. You never know the gems you left behind.

Qn 5: Where can our readers find out more about you, do you have a website, or a way to be contacted?
