About the Author
Better known for being an awesome father, devoted husband and candidly, being way too impressed with himself; Ron Randall has been in love with words from a very early age.
He whiled away entire seasons exploring the worlds of Tolkien, Donaldson, Kurtz, Eddings, Anthony, Aspirin, Resnick, Silverberg, Harrison and too many more legends of the genre to count. When he first put pen to paper, however, it was creating intelligence studies for US military and political leaders, when US troops were getting deployed to hot spots around the globe.
When not spending time with his family he enjoys reading, writing, movies, music, travel and the company of other smart-asses.
He was born in California, raised in Michigan, served his country as an intelligence analyst in the US Army, attended college at San Diego State, and somehow, after all that, found himself a Hoosier, and decided he liked it. Must be something about corn and cows…
Qn 1: Can you tell us more about your book, Witches, Knaves & Fairy Graves: Rise of the New Arcana, What is it about?
Witches, Knaves & Fairy Graves is the second instalment in the Rise of the New Arcana contemporary fantasy series. It follows Dalton Graham, a one-time college student, discovered to be the offspring of two powerful Fairy houses, one of which wants him dead. Book one saw him start to discover his true identity and the magical abilities that were his birthright, although at a cost to the friends that were trying to protect him. His college crush turned martial arts maiden of death’s younger sister was abducted mid-combat at the end of the first book, Another Fairy Bastard.
Now Dalt must try to find out who the Fairy sorcerer who kidnapped her was, where he has hidden her, and how to rescue her, all while trying to defend the city of Indianapolis from a monster that is slaughtering its mages one by one. Meanwhile, the fiercest lord in all known Faerie has been ordered to slay young Dalt, Umiwyn, his true love, and Katayina, a shaman of the Lost Tribe.
Dalt is moving at breakneck speed while he tries to protect those he cares about, rescue Kitzu, Umiwyn’s sister, and master the magical skills that may be the only thing that can turn away the Fae that wants his head.
Qn 2: Who do you think would be interested in this book, Witches, Knaves & Fairy Graves: Rise of the New Arcana, is it directed at any particular market?
The Rise of the New Arcana series is for anyone that wants to be transported to a world only slightly different than our own, where almost anything, good or bad, is possible. It is a world filled with danger, excitement, and humor, love, and where someone with an unquenchable spirit can still make a difference.
Qn 3: Out of all the books in the world, and all the authors, which are your favourite and why?
The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny was a masterpiece that in my mind blazed a path into urban fantasy, what it could and should be.
David Eddings’ Belgariad should be read by anyone who loves epic fantasy. I don’t know that it can be written better.
Stephen Erikson’s Malazan series doesn’t even need to be explained.
Miles Cameron’s Traitor Son Cycle shows that any author, on any given day, can touch the magic, and share it with us all.
Qn 4: What guidance would you offer to someone new, or trying to enhance their writing?
Read and reread the greats. Don’t let anyone tell you who the “greats” are.
If it touches you, impacts you, and changes how you think and write–it has done all you could ask a book to do. Learn from those. Immerse yourself in the style. Write. If it gets away from you, sometimes you shouldn’t try to reel it back in–because sometimes it turns into something better than you could ever imagine.
Ignore your critics. Far more people will love your work than hate it. If you help someone else feel the magic, if even for a moment, you have fulfilled one of life’s highest purposes.
