About the Book
Acceleration is a high-octane novel featuring illegal street racing, mafias, and decisions that accelerate and spin out of control. Amanda, the ex-cheerleader, is trying to escape an image of herself. Ben, whose broken heart led him to give up and become a drug dealer. Natalie, the savvy mechanic who quietly buries her pain. Jordie, whose debts leave him entangled with the mafia. Brooke, Jordie’s girlfriend, whose clutch is a little too sticky. Then there’s Axel, the self-loathing FBI agent who wants to be anywhere but here. Jared and Edge are two mafia brothers on the verge of a bloody war, both using street racers to do their bidding. Axel is desperately trying to take the brothers down—finally redeeming himself for his failures. Fast cars. Mafia ties. What could go wrong?
About the Author
Shaylynn Hayes is a writer, graphic/web designer, political science enthusiast, and lover of flowers and the ocean. Shaylynn comes from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, but has always been fascinated with fast-paced, morally ambiguous stories. Some of her favourite books include Savages by Don Winslow, Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire, and classics like Wuthering Heights, and Pride and Prejudice. Shaylynn also likes to take influence from television and loves shows like Gossip Girl, 90210, Pretty Little Liars, Desperate Housewives, Dead To Me, and really anything where character-driven mistakes cause drama.
Qn 1: Can you tell us more about your book What is it about?
Acceleration: A High Octane Novel is meant to be a wild and fun ride. I was inspired by my love of The Fast and the Furious, Gossip Girl, Smokey and the Bandit, Need for Speed, among many other great films and TV shows. I love character-based dramas, but I also love fast-paced action. Hopefully there’s something there for lots of readers. Did I mention that I’ve always loved cars? My father was a stock car driver before I was born and I always wished he still was growing up.
Qn 2: Who do you think would be interested in this book, is it directed at any particular market?
I think anybody who loves cars, or just fun action/crime novels could enjoy this book. As for the market– I’d say any adult who enjoys action, drama, or crime novels could enjoy Acceleration. I personally think fans of Don Winslow’s work, and The Fast and the Furious franchise will really click with this.
Qn 3: Out of all the books in the world, and all the authors, which are your favourite and why?
This is such a hard question for any writer. However, I can narrow it down to a few favorites.
- A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
- Everything Jamie McGuire writes (seriously, she is AMAZING).
- The Chemical Garden Trilogy by Lauren DeStefano
- Savages and Kings of Cool by Don Winslow
I’m one of those people whose favourite book at any given time is usually, “the last one I read”, so it’s kind of hard for me to pinpoint. However, all of those above I will likely (and happily) read again.
Qn 4: What guidance would you offer to someone new, or trying to enhance their writing?
Write a lot. Read a lot. Don’t worry about it being perfect, and DO NOT EDIT WHILE YOU WRITE. Editing is entirely different, and it has no place during the creative process. Let the ideas flow, and let them suck for many projects. The first novel I ever wrote I threw in the trash. Literally.
Qn 5: Where can our readers find out more about you, do you have a website, or a way to be contacted?
I can be found at www.shaylynnhayes.com which is my personal website and blog.
