Book 1 – Fae or Foe?
No one would want to kill a Faery, surely?
Jack Crackley wouldn’t; he has no time for make-believe. No decent teenager does. There are plenty of other things to worry about; his mum, jobs, school, the local bullies, not to mention some weird disease that’s affecting kids the world over.
However, things are never as they seem. Little eyes watch out for him whilst bigger ones seek him for their own ends. Jack will have to step up if both the Fae and our children are to stand a chance. And that’s a tall order when you have no idea who you really are…
About the Author
I live in the East Midlands, right in the centre of the UK, and when I’m not writing or working, I’m with the family or walking the dog in the local woodlands seeking those ever-elusive Fae. Or sitting, pint in hand with the good friends I grew up with. Some of them are hidden in the books themselves; quite a few characters are based on the people I know and love.
Publishing wise, I am a mere fledgling writer, having had a few short stories published to date but always trying for more.
And so, to the Cracklocks… “The Cracklock Saga” series of books came about from reading some pretty awful fairy books to my daughter over the years – she’s 13 now and has now (with more than a little relief, I have to say) left those behind. But I always wondered what would happen if someone didn’t like fairies, what they would do about it, and could anybody stop them? This idea grew, and the Cracklocks were born. I liked the idea of people who hated the Fae and everything they stood for. And who knew just how wicked those people were? I certainly didn’t until Anastasia and Agatha got their claws into me!
The Cracklock Saga is my first series, and I have huge plans for it. The shadowy Tobias is begging for his tale to be told, and this will be forthcoming. Plus, I want to know more about Fermerillion, Dorcas and the rest of the good guys – where did they come from? And what really happened between Elsie and Malchiah all those years ago? I think I know, but they all have a habit of surprising me when I’m scribbling. More than you will ever know.

Qn 1: Can you tell us more about your book What is it about?
The Cracklocks are a family who, thanks to their rather unique ancestry, can see Faeries. The main protagonists are a branch of the family who hates the Fae and does anything they can to rid our world of them. They have actually found a way to destroy Faery itself and it falls to Jack and his friends to try and stop them. Unfortunately, Jack knows nothing about Faery or what is going on; at four years of age, he was glamoured, along with his mother, to forget everything while his father tried to stop his estranged family. The series tells of Jack’s adventures as he and his friends try to thwart the family and their destructive schemes as well as try to find his missing father.
Qn 2: Who do you think would be interested in this book, is it directed at any particular market?
Anyone who is interested in Fantasy and hidden worlds really. It is written for young adults really (no swearing involved) but all of my readers so far are adults, who say that they love it. Anybody who enjoys a tale of good people trying against horrendous odds.
Qn 3: Out of all the books in the world, and all the authors, which are your favourite and why?
I would have to say “The Gunslinger” series by Stephen King. They take you to all kinds of wonderful worlds, fraught with peril. Real “edge of your seat” reading those. Elements of them appear in my books.
Qn 4: What guidance would you offer to someone new, or trying to enhance their writing?
Just write! Get it all down, take a deep breath, then edit it. You will have moments of doubt, you’ll tear your hair out because it isn’t working, you’ll spend time fiddling with your phone whilst the laptop sits untouched. It doesn’t matter. Write a little, write a lot. Find a system and stick to it. When you’re done and you’ve edited it yourself, you will need to find other eyes to go over it. Find and pay for a good editor. If you can’t do that, then find some people to beta read it for you. I guarantee that they will find things you missed. Then decide if you want to go self-published, or start pitching to agents and publishers. To be honest, given that most smaller-scale publishers want you to market your book anyway, self-publishing is worth considering. Get a great cover. And believe in yourself. Not everyone has the guts to do what you’re doing. Writing.
