INTO THE SHADOWLAND: The Secret of the Last Neanderthals

“Think Neanderthals were just grunting brutes? Think again. This fascinating journey into our deep past will challenge everything you thought you knew about our long-lost cousins.” — Patrick Keeney, Canadian Author and Journalist

A DEADLY ACCIDENT. AN IMPOSSIBLE ARTIFACT. A SPECIES THAT REFUSED TO DIE.

Forty-three miles east of Salt Lake City, a high-speed collision on a lonely highway reveals something that shouldn’t exist. When wolf expert Lilly Feron is called to the scene, she expects a common gray wolf. What she finds is a biological anomaly: a massive, prehistoric Beringian wolf—a predator that officially went extinct at the end of the Ice Age.

But the wolf is just the beginning.

Lodged in the animal’s vertebrae is a weapon as ancient as the beast itself: a hand-carved spearhead of exquisite craftsmanship, engraved with a microscopic map. When Lilly enlists the help of unconventional paleoanthropologist Professor Austin Walker, their analysis uncovers a secret that could rewrite human history. The DNA extracted from the bone weapon doesn’t match any known human profile. It matches the genome of Homo neanderthalensis.

THEY ARE NOT GONE. THEY ARE HIDING.

Deep in the treacherous wilderness of the Bitterroot Mountains, a clan of survivors has flourished in secret for forty thousand years. Protected by the geology of a lost “glaciokarst” valley, they are faster, stronger, and more connected to the earth than modern humans could ever dream. Now, Omu, a formidable hunter and the clan’s future leader, has ventured out of the shadows. He is tracking the wolf to retrieve the sacred map that protects his people’s sanctuary—and he will stop at nothing to get it back.

But Omu is not the only hunter in the forest.

The FBI, fearing a biological threat, has deployed a ruthless team of poachers and an elite Shadow Wolf tracker to hunt him down. As modern technology clashes with ancient instinct, Lilly and Walker must race to decode the map and find the Hidden Valley before the modern world destroys the last remnants of our ancient family.

BASED ON REAL NOBEL PRIZE-WINNING SCIENCE

Into The Shadowland weaves heart-pounding action with the cutting-edge science of paleogenomics. Building on the groundbreaking work of Svante Pääbo—winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize for sequencing the Neanderthal genome—author J.M.G. Schmidt constructs a frighteningly plausible “what if?” scenario.

About the Author

I was born in Germany in 1967. I completed various training courses and studied Viticulture and Oenology. I worked as a journalist, wine merchant and building contractor.

One of my ancestors was a doctor, another an archaeologist and another a Neanderthal (haha). There is a part of all of them in me. Perhaps that is why this book came into being.

I read about Svante Pääbo and the Nobel Prize that he won in 2022… and I had this amazing Idea. Yes, theoretically, Neanderthals could live in the USA until today, and science tells us why.

The book is written by me personally – without AI – guaranteed! You will enjoy it!

Qn 1: Can you tell us more about your book? What is it about?

Can you imagine to meet another human species? In my story that happens: When a wolf expert and a paleoanthropologist discover a weapon made of fresh Neanderthal bone, they are plunged into a race against the FBI and a ruthless poacher to protect a secret valley in Montana where humanity’s ancient cousins have survived for millennia.

Qn 2: Who do you think would be interested in this book, is it directed at any particular market?

This novel is for old and young readers who love endless action, intelligent science, fantasy and suspense. A bit of everything and never boring with a wonderful showdown. My book is already a bestseller in Europe (The German title: “Das Tal der Verborgenen”).

Qn 3: Out of all the books in the world, and all the authors, which are your favourite and why?

I love many books, for example Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park, Jean M. Auel’s Clan of the Cave Bear, and the high-stakes scientific thrillers of James Rollins. They are just exciting.

Qn 4: What guidance would you offer to someone new, or trying to enhance their writing?

Think first, take time, find something new or special, then make a good concept, write the story and, when finished, check it carefully for 10 times until it is great. 🙂

Qn 5: Where can our readers find out more about you, do you have a website, or a way to be contacted?
