About the Book
Reflections: A Journey through Life is more than just a poetry book, it’s a transformative pilgrimage of the soul, heart, and mind. Moreover, it’s a true story of overcoming hardship and finding hope, even in the direst of circumstances. Through heartfelt poetic storytelling, Jesus Valencia illustrates his personal experiences spanning five decades of his lifetime, including serving his country, navigating substance abuse, and living abroad in Korea. The relatable struggles and victories within these pages serve as a reminder of our undeniable interconnectivity and that we are never completely alone on this beautifully tumultuous journey. Above all, we are reminded that “[we] need darkness / to see the stars, and / sometimes courage / can be the same.”
When you have enjoyed a life that has been well lived there is always plenty to look back on and ponder. No life is ever perfect and we each have moments that are good and bad, happy and sad, momentous and trivial, as we face the challenges that we encounter and either overcome them or resign ourselves to their influence over us.
In Reflections: A journey through life by Jesus Valencia, you are treated to a snapshot of his life, loves, fears and all the things that make life worth living. From verses that explore his dreams for the future, right through to the contemplation of death and how we face that most final of instants, he captures moments that go beyond simple poetry and take you on a journey that many have experienced but which are intimate at the same time. You can start at the beginning, the middle or end, read it all at once or take your time over days or weeks. It is a book to pick up at times when we want to reflect on our own lives, hopes or dreams or when we are looking for courage in the face of fear or uncertainty.
