About the Book
“My Dad is not a Mom” is an adorably illustrated and heartfelt story of a single father and his four children. When asked why their family is different, dad replies “Families come in lots of flavours, just like ice cream.” Children will be able to understand and empathize with the lessons in this book, and see that love is what is important when it comes to the people around us.
About the Author
Jalal Wilson is a father, mentor, writer, and author of the new children’s book “My Dad Is Not A Mom”. Jalal lives in Seattle, WA with his four children and their dog. With seven years of experience as a single father of four, Jalal is a strong believer in learning through life’s lessons. Always a lover of the art of story he decided to create his children’s book to help other people facing the same adventures and challenges as he was. A stationary enthusiast like so many writers, Jalal loves a great cup of green tea, reading, working out, writing, and of course spending time with his family. A vegan 75% of the time, he enjoys cracking a good dad joke, and spending time outside when its warm.
Qn 1: Can you tell us more about your book What is it about?
My book is about an experience I had with one of my children as a single father. My son had noticed he was the only kid that he knew of at school, who lived with just his dad. In the book, we go on to unpack what can be learned from his discovery and how to reframe differences.
Qn 2: Who do you think would be interested in this book, is it directed at any particular market?
I believe this book would interest single parents who are raising their children. Especially single fathers, we need to have some representation of all different types of family life. Not as an attempt to glorify it, but to understand it is the reality for some children. We need those children to know there are others with the same family structure and that they will be okay.
Qn 3: Out of all the books in the world, and all the authors, which are your favourite and why?
Victor Frankl’s “Man’s Search for Meaning” really helped me at a time in my life where I was struggling to find meaning in life. Dennis Kimbro’s “Think and Grow Rich: A Black Choice” was the first book I ever remember reading as a teen, it was given to me by my mother. That book taught me my dreams are possible if I am willing to take action on them.
Qn 4: What guidance would you offer to someone new, or trying to enhance their writing?
Just write! Write something every day, I do not care if it’s just 100 words. Eventually, a story will pour out of you. The habit of writing is the magical key.
