Qn 1: Can you tell us more about your book What is it about?
It’s a unique poetry book where each poem is accompanied with a YouTube link where that poem is performed as a song. Putting poetry to music can really help to open up the lyrics in a way that is much stronger than just reading those same words on a page.
About half of the poems and songs are my originals and about half are my translations to English of one of the most popular Russian singer-songwriters of the 20th century, Bulat Okudzhava. He isn’t too well-known in the west, but he is very popular in Russia. Here is a page with my lyric analysis and a YouTube playlist with my translations of his songs to English.
Qn 2: Who do you think would be interested in this book, is it directed at any particular market?
This is great for true poetry lovers. Not for people who associate poetry with politics or social movements, but people who associate poetry as food that nourishes your heart and soul. Anyone with that criteria for poetry will likely enjoy this poetry book.
Qn 3: Out of all the books in the world, and all the authors, which are your favourite and why?
I like books written by authors who challenge me and open my mind. Sooren Kierkegaard seemed to do that both with his style of writing and ideas when I was younger.
Qn 4: What guidance would you offer to someone new, or trying to enhance their writing?
Find areas of writing where you are bad and work to improve that. Don’t listen to compliments. Listen to critique.
Qn 5: Where can our readers find out more about you, do you have a website, or a way to be contacted?
My music and writing website is TouchedByASong.com and that is where I post all my latest work.
