The Only One That Knows

About the Book

Each year, more than two hundred people go missing from cruise ships.
Little does the McGrath family know their daughter, Kailey, is about to be one of them.

When seventy-nine-year-old Evelyn McGrath moves into a retirement home, it’s not everything she thought it would be. Then she reads an article about retirees living aboard cruise ships and thinks, why not? The cost of living is the same but with better food and better views. Her son, Jacob, isn’t as convinced. To show Jacob just how wrong he is, Evelyn books a fabulous cruise vacation for herself, her son, her daughter-in-law, and her grandchildren, Kailey, Shane, and Sam.

Since it is Kailey’s last summer before college, the McGraths see it as a chance to spend quality time together.
The ocean views, bingo, Broadway-style shows, and chocolate souffle—cruising is everything Evelyn wanted it to be.

Celebrating her eighteenth birthday aboard the Serenity, Kailey attends the teen center deck party.

But she never returns to her room that night.

With no police, no tracking dogs, no cell phone towers, and a vast ocean, the search for Kailey begins.

Some suspect Trevor, the creepy teenage boy who supposedly followed her to her room and left her a love note. Another suspect is Nate, a college-aged boy she kissed then rejected. Was he out for revenge?

The McGrath family continues their search as they are harassed by the media and begin to turn on each other, overwhelmed with grief and stress.

As the days pass, the rumors fly—did Kailey fall overboard, or did someone murder her on the cruise ship?

About the Author

With over 11 cruises under my belt, I love cruising, and will always love cruising. My two kids take up a lot of my time, I am a single mom, and a teacher. This summer I plan to take my kids on their first cruise, and later up the coast to San Franciso. I am a big believer in travel. Travel inspires my writing. I want my kids to explore new cities and have different experiences.

For fun I love to go line dancing, concerts, swimming, and the beach. I like to kick butt at laser tag, and binging shows like Bridgerton and Schitt’s Creek.

Qn 1: Can you tell us more about your book What is it about?

At the heart, the book is about the aftermath of tragedy when the McGraths go on a family vacation, and their daughter Kailey goes missing. This story was inspired by the real-life cruise disappearance of Amy Lynn Bradley. The Bradley’s were taken advantage of by scammers. It made me think of Madeleine McCann and how fast the media can turn on a family that is going through tragedy.

Qn 2: Who do you think would be interested in this book, is it directed at any particular market?

I am a big fan of cruising. I could see fans of cruising loving this book. While it is a mystery book, there’s also a lot of humor in it. That’s a bit of my personality shining through.

Qn 3: What guidance would you offer to someone new, or trying to enhance their writing?

I suggest going to a writer’s conference. I attended a virtual Writer’s Digest conference and I learned a lot about the industry.

Don’t give up! If you can’t traditionally publish, you can self-publish like I did. I got a lot of “Nos” and I decided to keep going. If you believe in your project make it happen for yourself.
