About the Author
Stec Stories is a publication under Stec Studio, run by media showrunners and YouTubers Katya and Tatiana Stec. The sister writing team creates interactive stories for all ages heavily focused on sci-fi and fantasy adventures.
Qn 1: Can you tell us more about your interactive web series, Galaxy-Boy Delivery, What is it about?
Space. Deliveries. Fighting the galaxy’s evil-doers, all while trying to provide fuel for a spaceship. Galaxy-Boy Delivery is a middle-grade, interactive web series that is told in the form of videos and improv. Produced by Stec Studio and distributed on All Ages of Geek’s YouTube Channel Galaxy-Boy Delivery will be like a book, but with characters talking directly to viewers to tell their story. Characters feature Stilo a runaway prince and Korl a space ocean king with a polar opposite dynamic.
Galaxy-Boy Delivery is part of a multiverse being created by Stec Studio and can be considered the first side-story of the main series. Along with the interactive aspect, there will be printable activities, story guides, comics and an anthology focused on their space adventures.
Qn 2: Who do you think would be interested in Galaxy-Boy Delivery, is it directed at any particular market?
Galaxy-Boy Delivery will be produced for ages 12 and up. It’s a middle-grade story through and through with some very animated characters. Fans of Steven Universe, Adventure Time and Avatar the Last Airbender will love the more lesson-based lore of the series, and the hilarious relationship between Stilo and Korl. It’s also a series the whole family can enjoy, especially those families who love Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and anime like Dragon Ball Z!
Qn 3: Out of all the books in the world, and all the authors, which are your favourite and why?
Katya: I read almost all of Avi’s books as a kid and remember browsing my elementary school’s library to see if they had any new paperbacks that I hadn’t read. As a teen and adult, I will also always stand up for the brilliant Stephenie Meyer’s work with The Twilight Saga. That series as a whole is both loved and hated by the world. Despite that, Twilight is still referenced today and has inspired many supernatural series in all forms of media. Shotaro Ishinomori who is known for Super Sentai and Kamen Rider series is another huge inspiration!
Tat: It is hard to choose one favorite but I do have three Authors that come to mind. Wally Lamb wrote “I Know This Much Is True.” Lamb’s work truly showcases mental health in a brilliant way that I have never seen in any book before. As someone who worked in the field, this book is definitely educational and impactful for those interested in mental health. Aaron Ehasz is known for his works like “The Dragon Prince” has a beautiful way of creating worlds and characters that feel real. His work inspires me. The last author would have to be William Mesce. He was a professor of mine from Kean University who truly inspired me to continue to create. His work is brilliant and his words always stick with me when I am creating.
Qn 4: What guidance would you offer to someone new, or trying to enhance their writing?
Don’t follow the crowd and take any and all writing advice with a grain of salt. If you go to any conferences or expos to connect with agents strive for originality. No one likes a talking-head or a repeat of a seminar.
Focus on your character-building first, and get to know your characters. Even act out your characters’ lives or play games like The Sims to create them and visualize them in real-time. Make those connections as you would in real life with friends and family. And lastly, challenge your characters to not be a copy of your own personal justices or beliefs. Help them come alive by giving them flaws and differences from yourself and what you’re comfortable with.
